Try a New Food Tuesday: Coral Red Jasmine Rice

Posted by Liz On June - 1 - 2010

IMG_6048Well, it’s Tuesday again, and that means there’s another new food to try! We’ve been doing fruits each week, which has appealed well to my 7 year-old, but I’ve still been unsuccessful getting my carnivore 4 year-old to partake in our weekly experiment.  So this time I scoured the grocery store, looking for a new whole food that would appeal to my son’s palate.  On my third trip to my store’s organic section, I found it: Fair Trade Coral Red Jasmine Rice. My son LOVES rice.  He eats it whenever offered, and it’s also one of the foods everyone in the household enjoys.

The kids thought it was very cool that the rice cooks up looking red, although my son did comment that the grains looked more brown before they were cooked. While the color was unique, the taste was not. The rice, whole grain, tasted just like other whole grain rice we’ve had, and had a bit of a bite — not as tender as white jasmine rice. Here are the collective opinions of our tasters:

7 year-old: Mmm…very good! I like it with ketchup! (She later changed her mind and only likes it without ketchup.) I give it a 5.

4 year-old: (Ate one grain) I don’t like it.

(While it would be great if he had eaten more, this was the first time he didn’t actually spit out our new food, so I consider it a success.)

Me: Tasty, nice bite. Not too different from other brown rice, though. I was hoping for something a bit more unique. I think it would be good if I had buttered and sautéed the rice first.

Daddy: (Actually, I think he snuck this one past me and didn’t try this week’s food. I might have to make him try the leftovers and update his thoughts then!)

So, we’re making progress, but what we learned this week is that rice is rice, regardless of color, and stubborn people who don’t like to try new foods don’t change much! But we’ll keep trying.

About Me

For many years, I was a typical American working mom, relying on takeout to get me through the busy evenings, and thinking about exercise but too exhausted to find the time. I ballooned from a size six to nearly a size 10 in under a year. I was fat, and I decided I was fed up. My transformation from then to now inspired friends and encouraged me to start this blog. I want other moms to know they don’t need to be satisfied with just “Looking Good (for a mom),” but that they two can make meaningful changes in their lives, health, and fitness.
