Our weekly experimentation with new foods continues. I’ve been trying to get starfruit at the store for several weeks now, hoping the shape might entice my little guy to actually try the taste of a new food instead of just the smell.
When you’re choosing a starfruit, find one that’s mostly yellow with a little bit of green. There might also be brown along the edges. That’s fine – you’ll cut those edges off and the fruit will taste great. The fruit should be slightly firm to the touch.
Once your starfruit is clean and the brown edges have been removed, slice it in order to create beautiful star shapes, as shown in the above picture. You can eat the entire slice whole, or enjoy biting off the points of the star, and throw away the very middle that’s leftover at the end.
How did we like the Starfruit? Was it another Papaya, that we’d all hate, or would this one taste good? Well, here are the results:’
4 year-old (Put his mouth on a piece and sank his teeth into it.): Eww!
Sure, he didn’t like it, but at least he did more than smell it. Progress!
Me: Mmmm. Yummy! Tastes a bit like pear or apple, but with a more mild texture.
7 year-old: Don’t like it! It’s a 1! (Then all her friends wanted to try it and really liked it so she snuck another piece and tried again.) Yummy! it’s a 4! Tastes like apple!
Daddy: Wow, this is actually good!
So 3 thumbs up for the starfruit, and 1 thumb down from Mr. Doesn’t eat Fruits or Vegetables. We really liked it and if you think you might like a fruit with a flavor like apple or pear, but with a texture like mango or kiwi, then give starfruit a try! And if you can’t get everyone in your house to try it, as I learned this week, a little peer pressure never hurt anyone!
What new food are you trying this week?
