Looking Good (for a mom)

One mom's journey through health and fitness as she reclaims the body she had before kids

Superwoman, I’m not!

SuperwomanThere seems to be a rather common reaction when I talk about my schedule and how I stay healthy.  That reaction? “I could never do that.” One friend even called me Superwoman. But I don’t have a cape, and Superwoman I’m not! And I didn’t go from my old lifestyle to my currently lifestyle in the blink of an eye, either. It was a long, drawn-out series of small, manageable changes.

Sure, it’s easy to look at someone with healthy eating habits and a healthy lifestyle and think, “that’s not something I could do.” And maybe it isn’t. Yet. It can be so intimidating to look a total lifestyle overhaul in the face.  And total overhaul really isn’t the answer, anyway. Such a dramatic change is too difficult to maintain, and most people slip easily back into their old behaviors.

But you CAN choose just one healthy behavior that you aspire to do. Maybe it’s as simple as cutting back to one soda a week. Or maybe it’s 20 minutes of activity at home a few times a week while the baby takes a nap.

And once that feels manageable, then maybe you start packing a healthy homemade lunch three times a week, or adding a once-a-week exercise class that interests you to your exercise plans.

A few weeks later, you might be ready to plan a week’s worth of healthy dinners, and maybe even get in three days of strength training during your week. Before you know it, you’ll be looking back at how you used to live your life, and be amazed at how far you’ve come!

And maybe some of your friends will start thinking of YOU as a superwoman!

About Me

For many years, I was a typical American working mom, relying on takeout to get me through the busy evenings, and thinking about exercise but too exhausted to find the time. I ballooned from a size six to nearly a size 10 in under a year. I was fat, and I decided I was fed up. My transformation from then to now inspired friends and encouraged me to start this blog. I want other moms to know they don’t need to be satisfied with just “Looking Good (for a mom),” but that they two can make meaningful changes in their lives, health, and fitness.
