Eat Local – Join a C.S.A.

Posted by Liz On June - 11 - 2010

IMG_6065In researching eating healthier, there’s lots of advice to consider: eat organic, eat whole foods, eat low-carb. It can certainly get confusing! With all of that conflicting information out there, it can be hard to know what to do. But the best advice I’ve heard is to eat local. Food is most nutritious when it’s just picked, and getting it local assures you of getting the freshest possible food.  While farmer’s markets provide good access to local farm produce, an even better way to get fresh local food each week is to join a C.S.A... Weekend Roundup: What’s eating you?

Posted by Liz On May - 22 - 2010

As I flit around the internet, I often find myself moved or inspired by posts or articles I find.  Most of the time, I tweet about them on my twitter feed, and there it ends. But for you, my blog readers, you may not always see those tweets or have a chance to read those articles.  And every now and then (like now), I get my act together enough to actually put together a “round-up” post to share some of those amazing and inspiring articles I’ve found.  This week, I found one post that moved me so much that I just HAD to share it with you... Try a New Food Tuesday: Mango

Posted by Liz On May - 4 - 2010

IMG_5995 If you’ve been following me for a while, you might call foul on this post.  See, for Try a New Food Tuesday, we’re supposed to try a new whole food. And if you know me, then you know I eat Mango every single day.  My favorite breakfast is half a chopped mango, blueberries or blackberries, no salt added cottage cheese, cinnamon, and walnuts. It tastes amazing and is a very filling way to start the day. I love it!.. Read More

Try a New Food Tuesday: Uniq Fruit

Posted by Liz On April - 27 - 2010

IMG_5993As long as you’re eating lots of processed foods, you’ll be used to unnatural flavors, high sodium and overwhelming sweetness and fatty flavors they contain. If you want to develop a taste for fresh whole foods, you have to eat them... Read More

Don’t Judge Me

Posted by Liz On April - 22 - 2010

Just Another Ten Thousand Kilometres To Burn It Off There’s something that’s been bothering me.  While obesity is getting a much more significant focus – by the First Lady, by the media, and by congress, the way the topic is handled puts so much focus and blame on the obese people. And people who appear to be obese deal with a great deal of discrimination – on the street, in the workplace, and at the doctor’s office.   While I don’t abdicate people of their personal responsibility, it’s simply not as simple as it seems... Set a good example

Posted by Liz On October - 16 - 2009
Show kids that being active is fun.

So clearly, I’m a mom. And as a parent, I want my kids to grow up enjoying exercise and having a healthy relationship with food. It’s a constant struggle to find the balance and decide how I should react when the kids want to binge on snacks instead of eating healthy food. What I’ve learned is that the best way to help your kids adopt healthy behaviors is by setting a good example... Read More

Why I’m Brand Choosy

Posted by Liz On August - 26 - 2009

You may have been wondering where I’ve been, given the lack of posts lately. Well, like many other people, I recently took a vacation. We went back to the lake, and I learned from my experience traveling there in July that I needed to bring a cooler of my usual foods with me, as the Oakland (Maryland) SuperWalmart doesn’t have the best selection of whole and organic foods... How much meat is too much?

Posted by Liz On July - 13 - 2009

SteakYears ago, when I was a teenager, I stopped eating meat. I didn’t become a vegetarian, per se, but I stopped eating red meat and pork, continuing to eat poultry and fish. I actually ate this way for many years, but partway through college I added red meat back to my diet. During the time red meat was off the menu, I focused my diet primarily on starchy carbs – pasta, potatoes, etc., and very few green vegetables, however, so I wasn’t eating very healthy!.. Read More

About Me

For many years, I was a typical American working mom, relying on takeout to get me through the busy evenings, and thinking about exercise but too exhausted to find the time. I ballooned from a size six to nearly a size 10 in under a year. I was fat, and I decided I was fed up. My transformation from then to now inspired friends and encouraged me to start this blog. I want other moms to know they don’t need to be satisfied with just “Looking Good (for a mom),” but that they two can make meaningful changes in their lives, health, and fitness.
