Coupon Your Way to Healthier Eating

Posted by Liz On July - 26 - 2011

Please join me in welcoming Lisa Lightner, who is guest posting today at Looking Good (for a mom). If you watch TV or spend any amount of time online, you’ve no doubt heard the words “Extreme Couponing.” It’s a newer cable TV program and it shows shoppers getting huge amounts of product, all for free using coupons. As a self-professed supercouponer, you might think that naturally, I’d enjoy the show. I don’t. In fact, I’ve grown to actually loathe the show and the term ‘extreme couponer’ over the past few months. I won’t even use it to describe myself... Read More

Try a New Food Tuesday: Rhubarb

Posted by Liz On June - 29 - 2010

Green stalks of rhubarb with a sweet sauce and crunchy topping!A few weeks ago, we received two large bunches of rhubarb in our C.S.A. share. I had seen rhubarb in the store (where it’s very expensive!), but never knew how to prepare it... Read More

Try a New Food Tuesday: Pea Tendrils

Posted by Liz On June - 21 - 2010

IMG_6080It’s pea season! The peas are ready to be picked, which means our C.S.A. sent us home with snap peas, snow peas, and even something called pea tendrils!.. Read More

Eat Local – Join a C.S.A.

Posted by Liz On June - 11 - 2010

IMG_6065In researching eating healthier, there’s lots of advice to consider: eat organic, eat whole foods, eat low-carb. It can certainly get confusing! With all of that conflicting information out there, it can be hard to know what to do. But the best advice I’ve heard is to eat local. Food is most nutritious when it’s just picked, and getting it local assures you of getting the freshest possible food.  While farmer’s markets provide good access to local farm produce, an even better way to get fresh local food each week is to join a C.S.A... Try a New Food Tuesday: Kale

Posted by Liz On June - 8 - 2010

IMG_6070This year, we were looking into joining a C.S.A. (community supported agriculture).  We started off on the wait list for one of the local farms, but I was excited to receive an email two weeks ago offering us a share of this summer’s fruits and veggies! (Not familiar with C.S.A.s? Look for a post about them later this week.) So, instead of finding a new food at the grocery store, this week, I took our new food out of our weekly share of food from the farm. In this case, I decided to find out how to use the lovely bunch of fresh kale in my basket... Read More

Try a New Food Tuesday: Coral Red Jasmine Rice

Posted by Liz On June - 1 - 2010

IMG_6048Well, it’s Tuesday again, and that means there’s another new food to try! We’ve been doing fruits each week, which has appealed well to my 7 year-old, but I’ve still been unsuccessful getting my carnivore 4 year-old to partake in our weekly experiment.  So this time I scoured the grocery store, looking for a new whole food that would appeal to my son’s palate.  On my third trip to my store’s organic section, I found it: Fair Trade Coral Red Jasmine Rice. My son LOVES rice.  He eats it whenever offered, and it’s also one of the foods everyone in the household enjoys... Read More

Try a New Food Tuesday: Red D’anjou Pear

Posted by Liz On May - 25 - 2010

So another week, another new food. I’m still trying to figure out how to get through to the 4-year-old. One of the few fruits and vegetables he’ll eat is an apple, so I thought I’d buy a Red D’Anjou Pear. Since it would look similar to an apple when cut up, I thought might actually get him to try it! And we don’t typically eat pears in our house, so I thought it would be good for all of us to continue to branch out and try things outside our comfort zones... Read More

Weekend Roundup: What’s eating you?

Posted by Liz On May - 22 - 2010

As I flit around the internet, I often find myself moved or inspired by posts or articles I find.  Most of the time, I tweet about them on my twitter feed, and there it ends. But for you, my blog readers, you may not always see those tweets or have a chance to read those articles.  And every now and then (like now), I get my act together enough to actually put together a “round-up” post to share some of those amazing and inspiring articles I’ve found.  This week, I found one post that moved me so much that I just HAD to share it with you... Try a New Food Tuesday: Starfruit

Posted by Liz On May - 18 - 2010

IMG_6030 Our weekly experimentation with new foods continues. I’ve been trying to get starfruit at the store for several weeks now, hoping the shape might entice my little guy to actually try the taste of a new food instead of just the smell... Read More

Try a New Food Tuesday: Papaya

Posted by Liz On May - 11 - 2010

IMG_6019We’ve been continuing our weekly introduction to a new food here in our home, and my daughter has requested we stick with fruit, for the time being.  So last week, I found a papaya at the grocery store. It wasn’t nearly ripe – still very firm and green.  So I bought one and let it ripen for the week... Read More

About Me

For many years, I was a typical American working mom, relying on takeout to get me through the busy evenings, and thinking about exercise but too exhausted to find the time. I ballooned from a size six to nearly a size 10 in under a year. I was fat, and I decided I was fed up. My transformation from then to now inspired friends and encouraged me to start this blog. I want other moms to know they don’t need to be satisfied with just “Looking Good (for a mom),” but that they two can make meaningful changes in their lives, health, and fitness.
