September 18, 2009 is the last day to enter the latest Turbulence Training Transformation contest (TC6). If you’re one of my regular readers, you’ll know that I credit Turbulence Training with helping to get me over my weight loss plateau and give me a figure I didn’t think it was even possible for me to have anymore!.. Is Exercise Just a Waste of Time?

Posted by Liz On August - 11 - 2009

8-11_TimeThere’s been quite a buzz in the fitness community about a story in the latest Time Magazine, entitled, “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin.” Perhaps you’ve read the story already. Many people who have read the article (and even those who have just heard about it) have had very strong reactions. From the fitness gurus, I’ve heard the article is misleading and will lead people to abandon exercise. From others, I’ve heard that the article substantiates their feeling that they are wasting time in the gym. So who’s right? Is exercise just a waste of time?.. Read More

Learn a few New Rules of Lifting

Posted by Liz On July - 31 - 2009

I was recently placing an Amazon.com order, and since my order already qualified for free shipping, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to purchase a book from my Amazon wishlist. The book was New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove. Lou and Alwyn also wrote another book together (with Cassandra Forsythe) called The New Rules of Lifting for Women with the tagline ‘Lift like a man, Look like a Goddess.’.. Read More

Being a part of the Twitter community has exposed me to dozens of other health and fitness bloggers. Many of them are simply amazing people. I’ve added many of their blogs to my blogroll, but I thought I’d occasionally give you links to relevant and interesting articles I’ve enjoyed reading from their blogs... Read More

What NOT to do in the gym

Posted by Liz On July - 17 - 2009

There are a few things I’ve learned NOT to do over the past year. These are common fitness mistakes that either waste your time, or cause your workout to be less efficient. Some of these are mistakes I made, others I was fortunate enough to learn not do before I made them. But they are all thing I see other people doing in the gym, just about every time I’m there. So here’s a quick list of things I’ve learned to avoid — and now you can too... Read More

Vacation workout plan

Posted by Liz On July - 10 - 2009

I mentioned in my last post that we were away last weekend. In fact, we traveled out to a piece of family property in western Maryland. It’s a lakefront property, but it’s been in the family for years, and conditions are…let’s just say…a bit rustic!.. Read More

Back hurting? Fix your ab workout!

Posted by Liz On July - 1 - 2009

I have to admit, I’ve been on a bit of a tirade lately about “conventional wisdom.” There are so many times I’ve heard people give health and fitness advice to others, and the advice is either either completely false, possibly true but there’s no research to support it, or the research that supports it is under debate. Yet, thanks to news articles that share the interesting conclusions of scientists, but hold back the boring details (whether the conclusions are based on research or conjecture, how the study – if any – was conducted, what peer reviewers of the study thought about the conclusions), everyone from my 10 year-old neighbor to a Personal Trainer at one of the local gyms will repeat the “sound bytes” from the article ad naseum... Push-ups: Then and Now

Posted by Liz On June - 25 - 2009

As I mentioned in my last post, I have a video of myself doing push-ups back in August 2008. I thought that those of my readers who are struggling to do push-ups from the toes might find it interesting. Hope you enjoy my kids being cute in the background!.. Read More

Evolution of a fitness plan

Posted by Liz On June - 22 - 2009

In the final post in my one-year look-back series, I wanted to walk my readers through how my fitness plan has evolved over the past year – as well as how my physical fitness has improved. I didn’t start out doing 30 push-ups in a row, cranking out chin-ups, or running a mile without getting winded. Not even close!.. Read More

Resistance Isn’t Futile

Posted by Liz On June - 6 - 2009

Many women (and even some men) that I know have figured out how to lose weight by eating healthy. They might be using Weight Watchers, or a program like Jenny Craig, or maybe they’re just being successful counting calories. But once they lose the weight, then the really difficult part starts: How do they keep it from coming back?.. Read More

About Me

For many years, I was a typical American working mom, relying on takeout to get me through the busy evenings, and thinking about exercise but too exhausted to find the time. I ballooned from a size six to nearly a size 10 in under a year. I was fat, and I decided I was fed up. My transformation from then to now inspired friends and encouraged me to start this blog. I want other moms to know they don’t need to be satisfied with just “Looking Good (for a mom),” but that they two can make meaningful changes in their lives, health, and fitness. Learn more about my personal story by reading the \"About the Author\" section and blog posts tagged \"My Story.\"
