Hiking in the Catalina Islands

Hiking in the Catalina Mountains

I just returned from an amazing long weekend away in Arizona.  I was headed out on business, but took a side trip to visit some family who lived nearby. When you’re traveling, or on vacation, it can be really tough to stay on track with nutrition and fitness.  While I allow myself some indulgences, I try not to overdo it with my eating. I also try to find a way to stay active, even when I might not be able to follow my normal routine.

My regular workouts have me swinging kettlebells in the gym, and I did find an opportunity to do just that on Thursday night, when I attended a local kettlebell class.  But when Saturday rolled around, I took advantage of my surroundings and decided a change in routine was in order. Instead of my typical kettlebell workout, I went hiking with my sister-in-law, some of my nieces, and my five year-old nephew.

Initially, we thought we were just going to hike for an hour, but we were having such a great time that we ended up hiking a total of 5.6 miles and about 1000 vertical feet, enjoying the amazing scenery in the Catalina mountains.  It was fun, a great workout, and a fantastic change of pace.

So the next time you go away, find a fun local way to get active, and break out of your routine!

About Me

For many years, I was a typical American working mom, relying on takeout to get me through the busy evenings, and thinking about exercise but too exhausted to find the time. I ballooned from a size six to nearly a size 10 in under a year. I was fat, and I decided I was fed up. My transformation from then to now inspired friends and encouraged me to start this blog. I want other moms to know they don’t need to be satisfied with just “Looking Good (for a mom),” but that they two can make meaningful changes in their lives, health, and fitness.
